What is a Wiki?
A Wiki is basically a web site that can be viewed and edited by as many people, or as few people as you want.
A Wiki does not have the same functionality as a "proper" web site, but is still very powerful and is really only limited by your imagination.
You can upload text, pictures, documents (Word, Excel, Power Point etc), movies, audio and even Widgets!
The most famous Wiki is Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia that is edited by anyone. (That’s why it’s NOT a completely reliable source of information!)
Middle School students will be creating a Homeroom Wiki of their very own. It will be similar to social network sites such as Myspace or Facebook, except only people who have permission will be able to view it.
Family members and Teachers will be able to view your Homeroom Wiki and all the students in you year. Everyone will be able to add pictures, files, or video and make comments using the Discussion function.
The best thing about Wikis is the ability to collaborate. Say, for example, you and two of your friends were working on a presentation for English. Rather than all three of you making individual PowerPoint slides, or all of you sitting in front of one computer, you could all contribute to a Wiki. You can work from home, add pictures or movies, make suggestions on how to improve the Wiki, all live and instantly updated. Very cool.
Have fun and get Wikiing!
