Welcome to the Technology site for Mr. Plummer's classes.

The design current challenge is: "Heavy Metal!

Your copy of the task!

Significant Concept:
People express their identity in many different ways
Unit Question:
What do people like?
Context:
The Jewellery Project will reinforce student’s understanding of the properties of timber, metals and plastics and how these influence design. Students will explore the materials and make appropriate design choices based upon this exploration. The concept of aesthetics will also be examined with a focus upon what various groups, tribes, in the community find aesthetically pleasing and why.

Task:
Different people in society find very different things attractive and appealing. Manufactures are always striving to find the next big thing and often this comes from the ‘modern tribes’ found in society. Your task is to design and make a piece(s) of body adornment for a specific tribe (demographic) of your choice. You must first decide on your demographic and find out what they find aesthetically pleasing.

AOI:
Health & Social Education

Awareness: Of the need for people to belong & connect
Refection: How people express their identity

Action: Create your own modern tribal jewellery

Plan Objectives:

Plan a Product or Solution
  • Construct a plan to create the product/solution that has a series of logical steps

  • Construct a plan to create the product/solution that makes effective use of resources and time

  • Evaluate the plan and justify any modifications to the design.

Exemplar PLAN work

Plan Tasks:

Plan your Product or Solution
  • Write a detailed materials and component list
  • Write a detailed Production Plan for how you will make your jewellery items.
  • Evaluate your plan and explain any change.

Try: Toms Planner!
Create Objectives:

Create the Product or Solution
  • Use a range of appropriate techniques and equipment competently.

  • Ensure a safe working environment for themselves and others.

Use Appropriate Techniques and Equipment
  • Follow the plan to produce the product/solution.

  • Evaluate the plan and justify any changes to the plan (when necessary).

Follow the Plan
  • Create a product/solution of appropriate quality.
Create Tasks:

Create the Product or Solution
  • Make your jewellery using the techniques practiced in the workshop. Best of your ability!
  • Keep yourself safe and watch out for others.

Use Appropriate Techniques and Equipment

  • Keep a detailed Process Journal each lesson. Use multi-media where appropriate.
  • If/when you make changes to you plan or design then make sure explain the reasons why.

Follow the Plan
  • Keep to your plan where you can and make something you can be proud of. Will your demographic like it?
Evaluate Objectives:
Evaluate your Product or Solution
  • Carry out tests to evaluate the product/solution against the design specification

  • Evaluate the success of the product/solution in an objective manner based on testing, their own views and the views of the intended user.

  • Evaluate the impact of the product/solution on individuals and on society.

  • Explain how the product/solution could be improved.

Evaluate your Use of the Design Cycle.

  • Suggest ways in which their performance could be improved.
Evaluate Tasks:

Evaluate your Product or Solution

  • Test and your jewellery. Wear it around, take surveys, try and sell it! (remember, these tests should have been design way back in Investigate!)
  • Evaluate your jewellery using the Design Specification.
  • Suggest improvements to your work based upon the test you have done

Evaluate your Use of the Design Cycle.

  • Reflect upon your own learning at each stage pf the design cycle.
